Sentimental journey

Is that it for David Beckham then? Now he’s got his 100th cap off Sir Bobby Charlton will the Leytonstone Terror never more wear the England shirt?

It seems entirely possible after his removal at half-time. Though his free kicks were still reliable providers of excitement in the commentary box and crowd, and one of the best things about England’s performance too.

That’s probably all that’s worth saying about tonight’s England friendly.

Oh, Kelly Rowland’s microphone couldn’t cope with Kelly Rowlands as she tried to add 500 notes that weren’t there to the United States of American national anthem. Motty has obviously been disuaded from mentioning empty red seats at Wembley - there can be no other account of his failure to have a go at the Club England Willy Wonka Golden Ticket-Holding sybarrites with their unwanted half-line passes. Lawrenson, or Lawro as his friends call him, is taking the role of curmudgeon too far - telling us how bad the game is just isn’t fun Mark; tell us why or something using your football expertise: and saying they’re tired and both playing the same formation isn’t enough!

Still, England won, no-one did anything too hideous - although a few tackles went in - and maybe Cappello did learn something about who to play where. Probably not Defoe up front if Alan Shearer has his way.
